Detecting Objects in Images

Chapter 16 described methods to classify images. When we assumed that the image contained a single, dominating object, these methods were capable of identifying that object. In this chapter, we describe methods that can detect objects. These methods all follow a surprisingly simple recipe—essentially, apply a classifier to subwindows of the image—which we describe with examples in Section 17.1....

On Clustering Images of Objects

The images of an object may look very different under different illumination conditions or viewing directions. This thesis considers the problem of clustering images of various objects into disjoint subsets according to object identity. The clustering problem has been studied for decades and currently it is one of the most active research fields in machine learning. Compared to other data types...

Circularity of objects in images

The most commonly used measure of circularity of objects in images is shown to give incorrect results. An alternative measure of circularity based on the distance between a set and a discrete disk is described. The alternative measure gives circularity zero (distance zero) for discrete disks and values in the range (0,1] for discrete sets which are not disks.

Anatomic Objects from Medical Images

Figural object models represent object shape in terms of a hierarchy of simple shapes, protrusions, and indentations that we call "figures". Each figure has an unbranching, coarsely sampled net of medial primitives which carr>.: width information. The figural hierarchy and its medial primitives thus define the boundary with a -tolerance proportional to the corresponding medial widths, and assoc...

The size of objects in natural images

This paper introduces a new method for analyzing scaling phenomena in natural images, and draws some consequences as to whether natural images belong to the space of functions with bounded variation. In some sense, our analysis computes the size distribution of objects in an image. By using the dead leaves model, we study the innuence of occlusion on size distribution, and prove compatibility w...
